Health Minister urges persons to host virtual events instead of physical gatherings this Christmas

by November 20th, 2020

Health and Wellness Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton says this Christmas will not be typical.   Noting that the world has never experienced a Christmas season amidst a covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Tufton says persons must continue to be vigilant.

Pointing out that some 43 thousand passengers are expected to enter the island via the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston next month, he says a COVID 19 surge is possible.

He says this coupled with an expected spike in respiratory illnesses such as the flu, extra vigilance must be practiced by all.

Noting that the nation cannot become complacent, he says citizens must exercise caution and protect the elderly population which is most vulnerable.  Dr Tufton is urging persons to avoid “mixing and mingling” and host virtual functions where possible.

He was speaking during a COVID 19 Conversations press briefing Thursday evening.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness is to make an announcement in the coming weeks, regarding the protocols that will govern the Christmas period.
