Health ministry wants more action to counter mosquito breeding

by February 12th, 2016

The Health Ministry says several communities across the island still have significant levels of mosquito breeding.

It is appealing for persons to search for, and destroy mosquito breeding sites, especially in light of the confirmation of Zika virus on the island, and the continued circulation of other mosquito borne diseases, such as Dengue Fever, and Chikungunya.

In a statement, chief medical officer, Dr. Winston De La Haye, says some of the areas with the highest concentration of mosquito breeding sites, are in the parishes of Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Catherine, Clarendon, and St. Elizabeth.

He says, there are several areas in other parishes that are also of concern.

The health ministry confirmed Jamaica’s first case of the Zika virus on January 29, and has since visited three thousand 7 hundred and 87 households,  and thirty-two blood samples, were taken.

Fifteen samples were sent to Carpha laboratory on February 2, and the others will be sent-off this week.

It says, on February 5, Carpha reported that five of the samples sent on February 2, were positive for the Dengue virus.

Carpha has not reported any other sample positive, for Zika virus.
