Health records clerks and technicians at St. Ann’s Bay hospital on strike

by May 14th, 2015

Health records clerks and technicians attached to the St. Ann’s Bay hospital are on strike.

Some 40 workers of the medical records department walked-off the job this morning, pressing management for better working conditions.

Health records clerks and technicians are responsible for registration of patients, cataloguing of patient’s records, and documentation relating to court matters.

Irie FM News understands that for some time now, the workers have complained to the management about a leaking roof, which results in their bathroom being constantly wet, the lack of storage space, inadequate chairs, and unbearable heat in the working area.

The union of Technical Administrative and Supervisory Personnel UTASP, which represents the workers, says it has written to the management of the St. Ann’s Hospital giving them an ultimatum.

General Secretary St. Patrice Ennis says meetings were held and promises were made.

He said even after the ultimatum had expired the workers were still waiting for their issues to be addressed.

Mr. Ennis says to date; nothing has been done to fix the problems.

He claims that the workers were faced with insults and threats this morning about being replaced, if they took any form of industrial action, hence the protest.
