Heavy rains in sections of Portland force some schools to close

Chairman of the Portland Municipal Corporation Paul Thompson says, normality is returning to the parish following heavy rains which have been, lashing the parish since yesterday (Nov 19).

The rainfall resulted into some schools in eastern Portland being closed today.

The National Works Agency had also indicated earlier that a team was deployed to clear landslides, along the breast-works to Windsor Corridor in Portland, which has been reduced to single lane traffic, in the vicinity of Tom’s Hope.

Mayor Thompson says the heavy rains have subsided.

Meanwhile, Disaster Coordinator for the parish, Denise Lewis says the situation in the parish is not severe.

She says although the bad weather has affected some residents and motorists, there is no report of any significant damage.

She says the weather is being monitored and emergency teams are on standby to deal with any mishaps.
