Holness: IMF economic reform a success

by September 21st, 2018

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) economic reform is being dubbed a success by Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

Speaking at the government of Jamaica and the International Monetary Fund IMF mission review this morning (Sep 21), the Prime Minister said reform efforts are bearing fruits as there is reported growth in the economy, and inflation is low.

Mr. Holness also said there is confidence in the economy.

The Prime Minister said the reform programme should be continued as it has resulted in increases in employment, infrastructure development, reduction in crime, as well as facilitated government contributions to social initiatives such as the Programme of Advancement Through Health and Education (PATH).

The IMF review, which began on September 10, concluded today.

Meantime, Prime Minister Andrew Holness says the government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will assess the issue of governance in the next half-yearly review.

During his address at the government and IMF end of review mission press conference this morning (Sep 21) the Prime Minister emphasized that governance is critical to all reforms undertaken by the government.

He says in the process of the reforms institutions are created to implement the reforms.

Mr. Holness added that from the creation of those institutions arise questions as to how the nation’s institutions are operated.

The Prime Minister says citizens must have confidence in the public boards.

Today’s press conference marks the successful completion of the fourth review of Jamaica’s stand-by agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
