Holness, Phillips pledge to tackle violence against children

by November 19th, 2019

Prime Minister Andrew Holness says, he has appointed a National Commission on the Prevention of Violence, to combat Jamaica’s culture of using violence to resolve conflicts.

Speaking at the special session, where children addressed parliament today, Holness notes that, the commission is tasked with examining Jamaica’s violent culture and making far reaching recommendations, to stimulate behavioural change for sustainable solutions.

He adds that, with support from UNICEF, the country has a newly updated national plan of action, for an integrated response to children and violence.

The Prime Minister says, the government also has a road map, for putting this plan into action.

And, Opposition Leader, Dr. Peter Phillips says, when the People’s National Party becomes government, it will establish a ministry of social transformation and community development.

Dr. Phillips notes that, the social transformation the party seeks is not a matter on which the country should divide politically.

He adds that, the intervention will not end at the level of family and community.
