Holness questions opposition’s motive when it comes to crime fighting

by November 29th, 2022

Prime Minister Andrew Holness, has questioned the opposition People’s National Party, PNP‘s motive, pertaining to crimefighting measures.

He said, the opposition has continued to reject measures, suggested by the government, to fight crime.

Mr. Holness was reacting to the opposition’s lack of support, for the extension of the states of emergency declared on November 15, and a subsequent suggestion by leader Mark Golding, that the government should introduce precharge detention, as a means to tackle crime.

Speaking during a tour of SOE area 4, where he received an intelligence briefing on Monday, Mr. Holness said, the government suggested the same measure years ago, which was struck down by the PNP.

He noted, however, that he is happy that the opposition has made the suggestion, and will support the measure.
