Immigration officers to resume work following Labour Ministry intervention

by August 7th, 2019

Immigration workers attached to the Passport Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA), who took industrial action today, are to resume normal operations, following a meeting at the Labour Ministry.

The officers are reportedly upset after talks between the management and the union representing staff, the National Workers’ Union (NWU) broke down.

PICA Chief Executive Officer Andrew Wynter told Irie FM News that the matter at the heart of the contention – a special allowance given only to immigration officers at the islands 2 main airports – is to be referred to the industrial disputes tribunal.

Mr. Wynter said in the wake of the action, several contingency mechanisms were put in place to ensure the continued operations and minimize any inconvenience at the islands ports.

It’s expected that the Labour Ministry will ensure that workers resume normal duties.

Meantime, operations at the islands two main airports were not badly affected by the industrial action by immigration officers.

The immigration workers have been restive for several days and took industrial action in protest against what they describe as unsatisfactory compensation packages.

Concerns had been raised about delays due to the protest.

Sharon Hislop, Manager of Commercial Development and Marketing at MBJ Airports Limited – Operators of the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St. James told Irie FM News that the industrial action resulted in long lines.

And, Senior Director of Commercial Development and Planning at the Airports Authority of Jamaica  – Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston Alfred McDonald said there was no issue at the facility today.
