Indecom asks Police High Command to consider draft of new policy for handling seized guns

by September 29th, 2018

A draft of a new policy governing how guns at crime scenes are handled has been submitted to the Police Commissioner, for consideration.

The new policy was formulated by the Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) in the wake of revelations that some cops were allegedly planting guns at crime scenes.

Earlier this year, Indecom reported on at least 5 cases, in which based on allegations from citizens, checks were conducted and corroborating evidence found.

In giving an update at Thursdays press conference, Indecom Commissioner Terrence Williams said the draft policy speaks to keeping good records that help ensure the integrity of recovered guns.

Commissioner Williams explained the need for a new policy on handling seized guns, citing current challenges with police record keeping and the length of time the guns are kept.

Another measure being encouraged by Indecom is the use of body worn cameras that would allay claims that the guns had been planted.
