Commissioner of the Independent Commission of Investigations, Indecom, Hugh Faulkner is reiterating that police officers should not open gun fire at vehicles, when the driver refuses to stop at a check point.

The reminder follows a recent incident in which police officers deployed warning shots to get an illegal taxi operator to stop his vehicle, during a high speed chase, in the Manning’s Hill area, of St. Andrew.

The taxi operator, 26-year-old, Travoy Pusey, has been charged with dangerous driving, among other offences.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Mr Faulkner said concern has been expressed about officers firing at moving vehicles.

He noted that the policy which guides officers, indicates that firearms should not be discharged at a vehicle, simply because the driver failed to stop.

Mr Faulkner added that weapons should not be discharged to immobilize vehicles.

He is urging law enforcement officers to adhere to best practices and to be more responsible in their actions, even as they seek to serve and protect citizens.

Mr Faulkner said the constabulary force needs to re-train any officer who is involved in an incident, in which a firearm is accidentally discharged.

He noted that the safety of firearms, in the possession of security personnel is crucial, as an accidental discharge can result in fatalities.
