by April 27th, 2022

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is urging witnesses to yesterday’s (April 26) fatal shooting incident in Cassava Piece, St. Andrew to come forward.

24-year-old Merchandiser, Kashief Smikle, otherwise called ‘Zino’ was shot and killed during an alleged confrontation with police.

The incident resulted in angry residents mounting roadblocks in the community today, which were later cleared by the police.

Head of INDECOM, Hugh Faulkner told IRIE F-M news that an investigation has been launched.

He said the police claimed that they were on foot patrol in the area when they were fired on by gunmen, and the cops returned fire.

He said this claim has been refuted by residents.

He said a firearm that was allegedly recovered from Smikle, along with the firearms of the involved officers, were retrieved for testing.

Initial accounts were provided by the lawmen and witness canvassing was also conducted, by INDECOM’s investigative team.

The police officers involved in this incident will be required to provide statements and attend the offices of the Commission for interviews.

INDECOM’s Family Liaison Officer will meet with the relatives of Mr. Smikle for empathetic contact and to arrange grief counselling.

Any information from witnesses that will assist the Commission in this investigation is required.
