India hammer Windies for 1-0 series lead

by October 6th, 2018

The West Indies suffered their heaviest Test defeat when they crashed to a massive innings and 272 run loss inside three days in the first Test against India in Rajkot.

The Windies, who started the day in deep trouble at 94-6 fell, for 181 with Roston Chase and Keemo Paul putting on 73 for the 7th wicket, before Chase went for a well-played 53 while Paul got 47.

Ravichandran Ashwin dominated with the ball taking 4-37 while Mohammed Shami picked up 2-22.

Forced to follow-on the Windies were again blown away for 196 but not before an attacking and fortune-filled cameo from Kieron Powell who slammed 83 off 93 balls.

Next best was Chase with 20 as left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav (5-57) did most of the damage with the ball.

Ravindra Jadeja grabbed 3-35 and Ravichandran Ashwin 2-71 as India took less than 100 overs to bowl the visitors out twice and take a 1-0 lead in the two Test series.

India’s previous largest winning margin by an innings was against Test debutants Afghanistan in Bangalore in June, when Virat Kohli’s side won by an innings and 262 runs.

Final scores: India 649-9 declared, West Indies 181 and 196.

The second and final Test is at Hyderabad from 12-16 October.
