Interdiction of Police Federation Chairman breaches his constitutional right to free speech – Bunting

by July 27th, 2023

The Opposition People’s National Party has questioned whether the interdiction of the Chairman of the Police Federation, Corporal Rohan James, breaches his constitutional right to free speech.

The Police High Command served the notice of interdiction, following comments Corporal James made while speaking at the funeral service for the late Constable, Damien Blair on July 15.

He had warned that the High Command could be in trouble if members were not paid money due to them for overtime work.

Opposition spokesman on National Security, Peter Bunting described the interdiction as unjust.

He said the action may have breached Corporal James’ right to free speech and goes against his duty of advocating for members of the Police Federation.

Mr Bunting has called on the Police Commissioner to reconsider the interdiction.
