Isat Buchanan apologizes for comments and use of song in reference to DPP

Attorney-at-law Isat Buchanan has apologized for comments and use of a song in reference to director of public prosecutions Paula Llewellyn.

He has been harshly criticised for what has been described as “misogynistic, crude, nasty, sexist, low and disgraceful language.

In a statement on Tuesday, Mr Buchanan said he had considered extensively, the statement made on a youtube channel he was co-hosting.

He states that though he is a believer in free speech, he recognises, now more than before the importance of preserving public civility and mutual respect in engaging with each other as a society.

Mr Buchanan stated that his comments and use of the song reference are indeed unfortunate and for that he unequivocally apologizes.

He added that he specifically wishes to indicate to Ms. Llewelyn that he deeply regrets this and is truly sorry.

He concluded stating that advocating for freedom of speech and expression, does not stand mutually exclusive with demonstrating exemplary decorum throughout public channels.

Mr Buchanan’s comments have been condemned by the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica, the Jamaica Labour Party Women’s Caucus and Gender Affairs Minister, Olivia Grange and the People’s National Party Women’s Movement among others.

Mr Buchanan also indicated his intention to resign as chairman of the PNP‘s Human Rights Commission.
