by September 18th, 2017

Scores of Jamaicans fleeing hurricane ravaged islands  are expected in the country  Monday night.

the Jamaicans are being  transported   from the British Virgin Islands , BVI.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security Colette Roberts-Risden  says a small  plane has been making several trips  from the BVI to Antigua  from where  the passengers will travel on a larger plane which is able to transport  over one hundred people.

She explains  that a small team comprising Social Security Minister Shahine Robinson, officials from the ministry , the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, the Passport Immigration and Citizenship Agency, and the Registrar General’s Department went to the BVI yesterday to assess the situation there.  7 persons traveled home with the team Sunday night.

The officials returned to BVI Monday.

Its not clear how many persons will travel home Monday night , as some persons had opted to remain on the islands ,  but send their children  and others back to Jamaica.

However with Hurricane Maria expected to wreak more havoc on several Caribbean islands , its expected that more people may decide to return home.

The Ministry says when the team returns a determination will be made if there is need for another flight  to transport Jamaicans home.
