Jamaica’s first female Chief of Defence Staff has been sworn in.

Rear Admiral Antonette Wemyss-Gorman was sworn in today (January 20).

She is also the first woman to be appointed the post in the English speaking Caribbean and the Commonwealth.

Following the reading of the instrument of appointment by the Governor General‘s Secretary Claudine Heaven, Rear Admiral Wemyss-Gorman was invited to take the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Office.

Meantime, Prime Minister Andrew Holness congratulated the new Chief of Defence Staff on her appointment, noting that he is looking forward to benefiting from her wise council.

He added that her many years in the Coast Guard have contributed to her expertise on issues relating to maritime security and the blue economy.
