by November 3rd, 2020

Despite the possible exposure to the Coronavirus, some Jamaicans living in the United States of America have expressed the importance of casting their ballots in today’s presidential election.

As the race for the White House comes to a close, Jamaicans who are eligible to vote in the USA say they will not waste the opportunity to be a part of a critical time in the country’s history.

Speaking with Irie FM News, Jheanelle Henry, who lives in Florida, says she believes, not exercising her right to vote, would severely impact the life she experiences in the country.

She also explains that she cast her ballot in the election on behalf of those who were not eligible to do so.

Meanwhile, one Jamaican man who lives in the USA says much is at stake for black people, to not exercise his civic duties.

Referencing the historical oppression of black people, who were also robbed of the right to vote, he stressed the importance of exercising that right, now that the opportunity has arisen.

And, polling in the United States of America will close soon in some states as the race, to what is being described as one of the country’s most critical elections draws to a close.

Polls in the states of Indiana and Kentucky closed at 6:00 p.m.

Georgia, which is dubbed, the first key swing-state, where the race could determine who becomes president, is set to close its polls at 7:00 p.m.

In some states, polling stations will be open until late with polls in Hawaii closing at midnight, and Alaska closing at 1:00 a.m.

As the race for the white house comes to a close, independent polls across the country are predicting a win for democratic candidate Joe Biden, who is challenging the republican president Donald Trump.

The BBC reports that the USA appears on course for its highest turnout in a century.

The first projections are expected in the coming hours from states which are solidly democratic or republican.

National polls give a firm lead to Mr. Biden, but it is a closer race in the states that could decide the outcome.
