JFJ calls for reform of FLA

by March 14th, 2022

Human rights lobby group Jamaicans for Justice, JFJ, has called for effective and comprehensive structural reform, of the firearm licensing authority, FLA.

The JFJ wants the FLA to be changed into an entity, that’s free from executive control by politicians.

This in the wake of a damning report from the integrity commission, about gun licences being granted to persons, with criminal background.

Subsequent to the report being made public, there were calls for accountability and the removal of the involved public officials from duty, namely, former ministers of National Security, Robert Montague and Peter Bunting.

Mr. Montague has since resigned as a government minister, but opposition Senator Bunting maintains, that he did nothing wrong.

JFJ’s executive director Mickel Jackson, wants the Andrew Holness led government, to get serious about tackling corruption and crime.

She noted that the findings of the integrity commission, relating to the issuance of gun licences to persons of questionable character, suggest clear instances of executive overreach, that undermines legitimate crime fighting efforts.

The JFJ executive director noted, however, that she welcomes the resignation of Mr. Montague.

She said she is hoping that Mr. Bunting will do the same.
