JFJ calls for probe into death of woman while in police custody

by March 9th, 2018

Human rights group, Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) is calling for an independent investigation, into the death of a 51-year-old woman of Jones Town in Kingston.

Police had reported that Desrine Morris committed suicide while awaiting a court hearing.

Director at JFJ Rodje Malcolm says Ms. Morris was taken from her home by police officers on March 1, about 11:00 a.m. allegedly to be brought before a judge that day.

He says it was publicly reported that she died around 5:30 p.m. on the same day, and had not seen a judge.

He adds that the police report states that she hanged herself, while in custody.

But Mr. Malcolm says, requests from relatives to identify her body were denied by officers at the Half-Way-Tree police station, and by the Tranquillity funeral home, where her body reportedly lies.

He says JFJ has written to the Institute of Forensic Science and Legal Medicine, which has administrative responsibility, regarding the situation.
