by December 6th, 2018

Sunshine Girls goalshooter Jhaniele Fowler has won the Suncorp Super Netball Player of the Year award after her record-breaking debut season with the West Coast Fever where she transformed a side that won just 2 games in 2017 into a 10-win outfit that made it to the Grand Final.

Fowler, joining the Fever after four strong seasons in the ANZ Premiership in New Zealand, led the Suncorp Super Netball League in scoring with 783 goals including an Australian single game record 66 on two separate occasions.

With Fowler taking over as goal shooter, the Fever went on to score a league leading 912 goals – almost 250-more than their previous season total.

The 29 year old, named on the Team of the Year in August, also finished second in rebounds with 35 – 26 behind fellow Jamaican Romelda Aiken who led the league with 61 while finishing the regular season second in scoring behind Fowler with 575.

The 2019 season in the meantime is scheduled to tip-off on April 27 with Aiken taking centre-court for former champions Queensland Firebirds against Kadie-Ann Dehaney and the Melbourne Vixens.

Shimona Nelson – another Jamaican playing in the Suncorp Super Netball League – will also be in action on the opening day for her new team Magpies Netball who face two-time defending champions Sunshine Coast Lightning.

Fowler meanwhile will be in action for the West Coast Fever who play away to Adelaide Thunderbirds, the new team of Sunshine Girls teammate Shamera Sterling on April 28.

The first rematch of the 2018 Grand Final between the Fever and Lightning take place in Round 2 on May 5.

There will also be a four-week mid-season break to cater for the 2019 netball world cup in Liverpool in July.

The league comes to a close with the Grand Final on September 15.
