JHTA Falmouth says diverted traffic through historic town is moving smoothly

by December 14th, 2017

The Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association Falmouth chapter says traffic in the historic town is now moving steadily.

Yesterday, motorists had to be diverted through the town of Falmouth, after a section of the north coast highway collapsed.

Concerns were raised this morning (Dec 14) about free movement of traffic, in and out of Falmouth for tour operators, taking cruise ship visitors to Ocho Rios.

There are 2 ships at the Falmouth pier, today.

Head of the Ocho Rios group in the Jamaica Co-Operative Automobile and Limousine Tours Limited (JCAL) Winston Levy told Irie FM News, that traffic going to and coming from Ocho Rios, was congested earlier this morning.

He says it is now moving slowly, but steadily.

And, Chair of the JHTA Falmouth Chapter, Robin Russell, says minister with responsibility for roads, Dr. Horace Chang, today ordered the implementation of temporary one way, to help ease the congestion.

And, the Trelawny police are urging drivers of heavy duty vehicles to avoid the town of Falmouth as this is causing traffic congestion.

Motorists, who may not have a need to be in Falmouth, are also being advised to stay away from the town.

Serious traffic delays are again anticipated today, as the motorists are diverted from the north coast highway, where a section of the roadway, has collapsed.

Head of the Trelawny police, Superintendent Dwight Powell, says the motoring public should expect some congestion during the course of the day, as the town of Falmouth cannot carry the volume of traffic that is expected to traverse that corridor.

And, with two ships in port today, Superintendent Powell says tourism interests will also be caught in traffic due to the road works.

Motorists who wish to enter Falmouth from St. Ann and St. James are being asked to make their way to the rock main road onto the small bridge via Martha Brae and vice versa.

Meantime, one public passenger operator, who gives his name as Gregory, says he had to drop off passengers before reaching the town due to the traffic.
