JLP & PNP both confident of victory in by election

With two days to go before the October-30 by-election, the two major political parties are expressing confidence of a victory in the South East St. Mary constituency.

South East St. Mary is one of 3 constituencies where by-elections will be held next Monday October 30.

The others are Southern St. Andrew and S. T. Andrew South Western.

The two major political parties have scheduled separate mass rallies in South East St. Mary over the weekend.

The Peoples National Party PNP will be hosting their major rally in Annotto Bay, St. Mary this evening (Oct 27) to sure up votes for the by-election, while the Jamaica Labour Party JLP will be hosting their rally tomorrow.

General Secretary for the PNP, Julian Robinson says the party ran a successful campaign.

He is expressing confidence of a win for the PNP, come Monday.

Meantime, General Secretary for the JLP, Dr. Horace Chang says everything is in place for the by-election on Monday.

Meantime, police are asking residents and business operators in South East St. Mary to avoid the town of Annotto Bay tonight and tomorrow night.

This in a bid to reduce traffic congestion in the town due to the 2 political rallies being hosted in the area.

The Peoples National Party is holding their mass rally tonight, while the Jamaica Labour Party’s mass rally will be held tomorrow night.

The meetings are the final gatherings for the 2 parties ahead of next Mondays by election.

The police say due to these two mass meetings, there will be limited parking in the town of Annotto Bay, between 5:00 p.m. and midnight, each night.

As such, members of the public who have business to conduct or who will be traversing the area are being asked to avoid using the town as far as is possible during the period of the meetings.

However, persons who must use the area should plan for possible delays.

The JCF traffic department has developed a traffic management plan to reduce congestion and provide access.

However, due to the narrow streets and other factors, congestion is to be expected.

Meantime, the police are reminding citizens that it is an offence under section 29 of the Public Order Act for persons attending the meetings or within earshot of the meetings, to be in possession of any offensive weapon.

Offensive weapons under this act include licensed firearms.

Therefore, all licensed firearm holders attending the rallies should make prior arrangements for the safe keeping of their weapons.

Under no circumstance should these weapons be left inside motor vehicles.
