Jones found guilty, UEFA fine Manchester United for anti-doping rule breach

by July 31st, 2017

Manchester United defender Phil Jones has been suspended for two European games for verbally abusing a UEFA anti-doping officer at the Europa League final against Ajax Amsterdam in May.

Jones was found guilty of “directing insulting and directing abusive language” and “a lack of cooperation and respect” towards the official.

United were also fined £8,900 while Jones was slapped with a fine of £4,450 pounds.

His team-mate Daley Blind was also charged with an anti-doping rules violation, but was only fined £4,450.

It is understood Jones was angry because an anti-doping official refused to let him pose for a photo after the game in which the United players held up a banner in tribute to victims of the attack in Manchester on May 22.

Blind it is understood was reluctant to take a test as requested because he wanted to celebrate with his team-mates, whose 2-0 victory over Ajax ensured their qualification for this season’s Champions League.

The 25 year old Jones will be ineligible for the UEFA Super Cup match against Real Madrid on August 8 and will also miss the first match of the Champions League group stage in September.

There is no suggestion that either player was guilty of doping.

The club is understood to be aware of UEFA’s decisions and have three days to appeal.
