President of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association, Winston Smith is appealing to parents to engage children in Labour Day projects as one way to ensure their safety over the holiday period.

His call follows the drowning of 17-year-old Shevenae Besley of Cousins Cove in Lucea, Hanover yesterday (May 21).

Speaking with IRIE FM news, Mr. Smith says by engaging with children during the holiday break, parents will reduce the chances of them being hurt.

He notes that the activities will also teach the children the importance of nation-building.

Noting the likelihood of children spending more time on their computers or cell phones over the holiday period, Mr. Smith is also urging parents to closely monitor the content their children consume.
