Judiciary announces resumption of jury trials and encourages jurors to wear masks

by April 19th, 2022

Jury trials are to resume for the Easter term of the Circuit Court, which will commence tomorrow, Wednesday, April 20.

The Court Administration Division says this comes against the background of a reduction in Jamaica’s COVID-19 infection rate and the revocation of measures under the Disaster Risk Management Act.

Director of Client Services, Communications and Information at the Court Administration Division, Kadiesh Fletcher says jurors are encouraged to wear their masks.

Meantime, Mrs. Fletcher says the participation of jurors is critical to ensure that trials by jury can proceed before the courts and are disposed of within a timely manner.

Anyone between the ages of 18 and 70 with a Tax Registration Number (TRN) or anyone who is registered to vote in Jamaica can be summoned for jury duty.

Jurors receive a stipend of $2,000 for each day they have been empanelled for a trial.

Mrs. Fletcher says plans are in place to expedite payments to jury members.
