JUTC ends service early

by September 25th, 2019

The state-run Jamaica Urban Transit Company JUTC terminated its services at 8 Wednesday evening due to lingering concerns about the safety of its staff.

JUTC managing director, Paul Abrahams told IRIE FM News that, the company is expected to achieve a full resumption of its service by 5 am, Thursday.

Meantime, Mr. Abrahams noted that JUTC rolled out one hundred and twenty of its buses, Wednesday morning, following Tuesday’s withdrawal of service by drivers.

The JUTC drivers pulled their service over safety concerns, after a colleague who was attached to the Rockfort depot was murdered in retaliation for the killing of a taxi driver, allegedly by a JUTC driver.

The bus company said earlier, it was introducing a phased resumption of service until the police give the all-clear, for full resumption.  The Spanish Town, Rockfort and Portmore depots were all opened, as the phased roll-out of buses began on selective routes.

Mr. Abrahams said, staff members are still concerned about their safety and that the company continues to assess the situation.

He added that all is being done to resume full service but he urged commuters to be understanding of the staff members’ safety concerns.
