JUTC extinguisher that burst on bus was not properly mounted

by April 7th, 2017

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company is reportedly taking a proactive stance, after investigations revealed, that the fire extinguisher that exploded on one of the company’s unit last Friday, was not faulty.

According to Communications Manager at JUTC, Cecil Thoms, while the extinguisher was not faulty, it is believed, it was not properly mounted, because it was placed under the seat of the bus driver.

He says, reports have revealed that when the driver was making a sharp turn on Weymouth Drive, the extinguisher rolled under the seats of passengers and eventually got stuck in the door.

He says, when the driver stopped to pick up a passenger and tried to open the door, pressure was placed on the fire extinguisher, and its content was released.

In the meantime, he says the company is ensuring it remains vigilant by making sure all the extinguishers are properly mounted.

Mr. Thoms says, the safety of passengers is the company’s main concern and that can be guaranteed by making regular checks to ensure the fire extinguishers are properly secured.

Five people were affected, when a fire extinguisher burst on one of the JUTC’s unit last Friday.

The situation caused panic among passengers, who had to break open a window to escape.
