Kayann Lamont’s family protest court freeing cop accused of killing her

by April 5th, 2017

A St. Thomas family protested today (Apl 5) against a court ruling earlier this week, that freed a policeman who was charged with killing a pregnant woman.

Corporal Dwayne Smart was freed by a Home Circuit Court jury on Monday of the murder of 27-year-old Kay-ann Lamont and the wounding of her sister.

The incident occurred nearly five years ago and Ms. Lamont was eight months pregnant at the time.

The family members who gathered in Yallahs Square bearing placards said the Justice system failed them.

They lamented that Lamont’s two children were still suffering from the killing of their mother in September 2012.

The crown had led evidence that Smart fatally shot Lamont following a tussle after he accosted for using expletives.

The defence argued that the policeman lost his balance and that   the gun went off accidentally.

The pregnant Kay-ann and her sister were shot. Kay-ann died.
