Lawyer requests site visit of homes Govt intends to relocate Garvey house occupants to

by August 21st, 2018

The attorney for the occupants of the Garvey home in St. Ann, Linton Gordon, has written to the Culture Ministry requesting that arrangements be made for site visits to the houses proposed for relocation.

This in the wake of an assurance by Culture Minister Olivia Grange yesterday (Aug 21), that 2 houses have been identified and will be offered to the occupants.

She did not say where the properties were located.

Prior to the announcement, the occupants claimed that government had not negotiated relocation and compensation with them, and that 2 homes were needed to relocate the 2 families now living at Marcus Garvey’s childhood home.

Government has executed compulsory acquisition of the property in St. Ann’s Bay, in order to develop it into a living history museum in honour of Jamaica’s first National Hero.

Speaking with Irie FM News, Mr. Gordon said the occupants have not yet officially been notified about the houses.

He expressed hope that the matter can be settled soon, if the occupants inspect the new homes and are satisfied with them.
