MAJ joins Opposition in expressing concern about gov’t’s decision to end Covid-19 pre-testing requirement for travellers

by April 14th, 2022

The Medical Association of Jamaica, MAJ has expressed concern about the government‘s decision to end the requirement for travellers to Jamaica to undergo a Covid-19 test, prior to arriving on the island.

Effective tomorrow, people travelling to Jamaica will no longer need to present a negative Covid-19 test result.

The wearing of masks in enclosed public places is also no longer mandatory.

In response to the announcement, MAJ President Dr. Brian James says it is unclear whether the recommendations were based upon extensive risk assessment.

He notes the spike in cases in some of Jamaica’s key tourism markets, while stressing the need for vigilance.

Dr. James adds that mask wearing and other safety protocols will continue in the public health sector.

Meantime, Opposition Spokesman on Health Dr. Morais Guy says removing the pre-test requirement was ill-informed.

He questioned the move, noting that a number of countries are experiencing increases in Covid-19 cases, arising from the spread of the Ba.2 sub-variant of Omicron.

As it relates to mask wearing, Dr. Guy says that move is also ill-advised.
