Maria Sharapova will not play in French Open

by May 16th, 2017

Maria Sharapova will not make her grand slam return at the French Open after the five-time major champion missed out on a wildcard .

French Tennis Federation president Bernard Giudicelli on Tuesday announced that Sharapova has not been invited to play at Roland Garros.

The two-time French Open champion returned to the WTA Tour last month after serving a 15-month suspension for testing positive for the banned substance meldonium at the 2016 Australian Open.

However, Giudicelli explained that Sharapova could not be granted a wildcard for the second major of the year in Paris, which starts on May 28.

There has been much criticism of perceived preferential treatment the former world number one has received since returning from her ban.

Sharapova was granted wildcards for the Stuttgart Open and the Madrid Open, where she was beaten by one of her most vocal critics, Eugenie Bouchard.
