McLeod targets record 4th consecutive win in Shanghai

by May 8th, 2019

World and Olympic champion Omar McLeod will target a fourth successive victory in the men’s 110 metre hurdles when he returns to the Shanghai Diamond League on May 18 for the one-day meeting’s headline event.

McLeod made history last year after clocking a world-leading 13.16 seconds to complete a hat-trick of wins to become the most successful athlete ever in the meeting’s traditional blue riband contest.

The 25 year old is set to line up against the likes of Spain’s Olympic silver medallist Orlando Ortega, 2015 world champion Sergey Shubenkov and the 2012 Olympic champion and world record holder Aries Merritt.

Also in the field are reigning world indoor champion Andy Pozzi, American Devon Allen, two-time Asian Championship and Asian Games winner Xie Wenjum and the current European indoor champion Milan Trajkovic of Cyprus.

Annsert Whyte –the other Jamaican confirmed for the meet so far – will face a loaded field topped by Qatar’s world number one and newly-minted Asian champion, Abderrahmane Samba, in the men’s 400 metre hurdles.

Samba not only went through last year’s Diamond League campaign without losing, but lowered the Qatari record on five occasions, the Asian record three times and finished his 2018 campaign by taking gold at the Asian Games and the IAAF Continental Cup.

Those looking to knock the 23-year-old off his perch in Shanghai include Turkey’s world silver medallist, Yasmani Copello, and Rai Benjamin who broke the North American record running 47.02 in Eugene last June.

The 2019 Shanghai Diamond League meeting on 18 May features 16 international events, nine for men (100m, 200m, 400m, 5000m, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, high jump, long jump, javelin) and seven for women (100m, 400m, 1500m, 3000m steeplechase, pole vault, shot put, javelin).
