Medical Technologists end strike

by December 11th, 2018

Medical technologists across the island have ended their two day industrial action following a meeting at the Labour Ministry this afternoon (Dec 11).

The workers will be back on the job come tomorrow morning.

Approximately one hundred technologists at the National Blood Transfusion Services, emergency labs, and the cross match units of the Victoria Jubilee and Kingston Public Hospitals have been off the job since yesterday.

Technologists in St. Mary, St. Catherine, Trelawny, St. James and Hanover also joined in the strike in solidarity with their counterparts in Kingston.

The medical technologists, who analyse blood and bodily fluids, were upset over the appointment of Dr. Michelle Hamilton, to the post of director of national laboratory services, after they claimed that several complaints relating to her have gone unaddressed.

General Secretary of Union of Technical Administrative and Supervisory Personnel (UTASP) St. Patrice Ennis says the appointment of Dr. Hamilton has been delayed.

He says discussions will continue at the local level with the Labour Ministry, until the matter is fully resolved.
