Met Office issues flash flood warning and watch for some parishes

by August 26th, 2021

The Met Office has issued a Flash Flood Warning for low-lying and flood-prone areas of St. Mary, Portland, St. Thomas, Kingston and St. Andrew, St. Catherine, Clarendon, and Manchester.

A flash flood warning means flooding has been reported or will occur shortly.

Motorists and pedestrians should not attempt to cross flooded roadways or other low-lying areas, as strong currents are likely.

Residents in low-lying areas should be on the alert for rising waters and be ready to move quickly to higher ground.

And a flash flood watch has also been issued for low-lying and flood-prone areas of Westmoreland, Hanover, St. James, Trelawny, St. Ann, and St. Elizabeth.

A flash flood watch means that flash flooding is possible and residents are advised to take precautionary measures and keep informed.

Both the flash flood watch and warning are effective until 5:00 p.m. today (August 26)

The Met Office says an area of low pressure approximately 322 kilometers South of Jamaica is producing showers and thunderstorms that are currently affecting the island.

Additionally, environmental conditions are conducive for development, and a tropical depression or storm, is expected to form later today or tomorrow.

This system is projected to move over the northwestern Caribbean Sea near the Cayman islands tonight, near Cuba and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico on Friday.
