Met Service predicts 25 mm of rainfall this weekend

by May 24th, 2019

The Met Service is predicting that the country could get about 25 millimetres of rainfall this weekend, into next Monday, due to showers caused by a persistent trough.

Projections are for periods of showers and thunderstorms, which may be heavy at times, to affect sections of most parishes, especially during the afternoon.

Duty Forecaster at the Met Service, Peter Fearon, says depending on the intensity of the showers, some areas may experience flooding.

Fishers and other marine operators are urged, to exercise caution, as sea conditions will deteriorate, in the vicinity of showers and thunderstorms.

Meantime, a flash flood watch has been issued for low-lying and flood-prone areas of Portland, St. Mary, Kingston and St. Andrew, and St. Catherine.

The flash flood watch will remain in effect until 5:00 tomorrow morning.

The Met Office says, a trough across the Jamaica and the Southwestern Caribbean Sea, is influencing unstable weather conditions across the island.

The forecast is for a continuation of showers and thunderstorms especially over eastern parishes, this evening into tonight.

A flash flood watch means that flash flooding is possible and residents are advised to take precautionary measures, and be ready for quick action if flooding is observed or if a warning is issued.
