Chairman of the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation and Mayor of Morant Bay, Councillor Lenworth Rawle, has resigned.

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie received the letter of resignation from Councillor Rawle, today (Mar 27).

It takes effect immediately.

In a statement today, Mr. McKenzie confirmed the resignation of the Mayor, and expressed thanks to Councillor Rawle for his leadership of the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation.

The Deputy Mayor and Councillor for the Port Morant Division Michael Hue, is to take up office as the new Chairman of the municipal corporation.

The ministry statement says this is in keeping with section 19 of the Local Governance Act.

It adds that this process ensures that the municipal corporation’s responsibilities of governance and service delivery continue uninterrupted.

This development follows a recent ruling by Chief Justice Brian Sykes which voided the election of JLP councillor for the Yallahs division Dean Jones.

The PNP members of the council had also said they would move a no confidence motion against the Mayor and his Deputy.
