Minimum wage to be reviewed

by July 3rd, 2015

The Minimum Wage Advisory Commission is inviting members of the public and interest organisations to submit, in writing, any comment, suggestion or proposal for the consideration of the commission.

The commission is in the process of reviewing the national minimum wage and the minimum wage for industrial security guards.

The minimum wage advisory commission says proposals should be submitted by interest groups not represented by trade unions, such as household workers and other interested non-unionised groups.

People submitting recommendations may be asked to appear before the commission in support of their written recommendations.

Recommendations should be forwarded to the commission no later than Friday, July 31.

Chairman of the Commission, Silvera Castro, says consultations will begin in august and are expected to be completed in November.

He says the commission cannot go with the 50 or 60 per cent increase that the public is looking for, but it will have to find a suitable balance .

The minimum wage was last adjusted in January 2014 from 5 thousand  to 5 thousand 600 dollars per 40-hour work week and from 7 thousand, 320 dollars and 40 cents to 8 thousand 198 dollars and 80 cents per 40-hour work week for industrial security guards.
