by December 30th, 2017

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it is assisting with efforts to have a Jamaican woman, who was burnt during an arson attack, in the Cayman Islands, flown back here for medical treatment.

Elaine Ricketts remains hospitalized in Cayman, after she was reportedly set on fire by an unknown assailant at her Shedden Road home, on December 27.

The fire spread to other sections of the building, resulting in about 12 tenants, to include 10 other Jamaicans, being left homeless.

It’s reported that the Cayman Islands health system does not have the facility to care for severely burned persons.

In a statement, the Foreign Affairs Ministry says, through Jamaica’s Honorary Consul Dr. Joseph Marzouca, the ministry is in the process of offering assistance in returning Ms. Ricketts to Jamaica, to receive treatment for her severe burns.

Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith expressed hope that Ms. Ricketts will receive critical medical attention as soon as possible, as things are in train for her return.

She also expressed empathy for the victims of the fire in the Cayman Islands.

The assistance from the ministry comes in the wake of an appeal from a friend of Ms. Ricketts.

Kerry-Ann Fearon told Cayman media that it will cost about $25,000 to get Ricketts out of Cayman and back to Jamaica for treatment.

It’s reported that Ricketts was in Cayman on a work permit, but her insurance was not up to date.
