by May 1st, 2018

The in-form Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah has been named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, a result that sees him earn another top honour in a spectacular debut season at Anfield in which he has scored 43 goals in all competitions.

Salah, who was named the PFA Player of the Year earlier this month, beat Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne and Tottenham striker Harry Kane to the award, which is decided upon by the media and will be given out during a reception in London on May 10.

The Egyptian became the 11th Liverpool player to win the award and the first since 2013-2014, when Luis Suarez also claimed the double.

Salah, who moved to Liverpool from Roma in July, has so far scored 31 Premier League goals this season to equal the record jointly held by Suarez, Cristiano Ronaldo and Alan Shearer for the most goals scored in a 38-game season.

He has two games remaining to match the record of 34 goals scored by Andy Cole during a 42-game season in 1993-94.

Salah meanwhile returns to action for Liverpool who take a 5-2 aggregate lead into the second leg of their Champions League semifinals against AS Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday.

Other players to receive votes from FWA members were: Sergio Aguero (Man City), Christian Eriksen (Tottenham), Roberto Firmino (Liverpool), Nick Pope (Burnley), David Silva (Manchester City), Raheem Sterling (Man City) and Jan Vertonghen (Tottenham).
