Montague alarmed that taxi operators disagree with proposal to open all routes

by July 5th, 2018

Transport Minister Robert Montague has expressed alarm that some taxi operators are not in agreement with the opening of all routes.

Speaking at the Transport System consultation today, Mr. Montague said that of the 16 point proposal aimed at formalising the industry, he was most surprised about the response to that specific proposal.

Last month, Mr. Montague proposed the plan in parliament in a bid to regulate the industry and ensure that commuters can easily access transportation.

The proposal looks at various areas to include route changes, renewal of road licences, and making the taxi industry more technologically based.

Mr. Montague explained that today’s meeting is an indication that taxi operators can have rational conversations about the transformation of the industry.

However, Henresse James, who was speaking on behalf of the rural stage carriage operators today, stated that the body is in agreement with the opening of routes.

She notes that there are additional aspects that can be considered to ensure that the specific proposal has a wider reach.
