Morata and Fabregas left out of Spain’s World Cup squad

by May 21st, 2018

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata has missed out on securing a spot on Spain’s squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals in Russia, with Cesc Fabregas, Marcos Alonso, Ander Herrera and Hector Bellerin also omitted.

The final 23-man squad, named by coach Julen Lopetegui, included four English based players in David de Gea, David Silva, Nacho Monreal and Cesar Azpilicueta.

However, there was no place for Morata, who has struggled with fitness and form and scored just 11 goals in his debut Premier League campaign, with Diego Costa, Isco, Sergio Asensio, Rodrigo and Lucas Vazquez preferred in attack.

Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta, meanwhile, was included in the squad a day after playing his final game for the Catalan giants.

Spain open their tournament against Portugal, their  neighbours on the Iberian peninsula, on June 15 before they face Iran and Morocco in their remaining Group B fixtures.

Spain’s 23-player squad:

Goalkeepers: Kepa Arrizabalaga (Athletic Bilbao), David De Gea (Manchester United), Pepe Reina (Napoli)

Defenders: Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea), Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid), Jordi Alba (Barcelona), Nacho (Real Madrid), Nacho Monreal (Arsenal), Alvaro Odriozola (Real Sociedad), Gerard Pique (Barcelona), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid)

Midfielders: Isco (Real Madrid), Thiago Alcantara (Bayern Munich), Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), David Silva (Manchester City), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Saul Niguez (Atletico Madrid), Koke (Atletico Madrid)

Forwards: Marco Asensio (Real Madrid), Iago Aspas (Celta Vigo), Diego Costa (Atletico Madrid), Rodrigo (Valencia), Lucas Vazquez (Real Madrid)
