With statistics showing that as at May 11, motorcyclists account for close to 30 per cent
of road fatalities—more than any other category of road user—the Police are once again
appealing to them to obey the law and exercise due caution and proper care when using
the roadways.
This latest appeal comes as 24-year-old Delroy Williams, of Bounty Hall in Trelawny
was killed in a crash in the parish on Sunday, May, 17.
According to information received from the Wakefield Police, Williams was driving his
motorcycle along the Bounty Hall main road when he allegedly lost control of the vehicle
and crashed into a tree. He was pronounced dead at hospital.
As investigators continue to probe the incident, the following are some safety tips for
motorcyclists:
1. Always wear a helmet. A proper motorcycle helmet is required by law for good
reason. A motorcyclist is 16 times more likely to die in a crash than a motor car
driver; wearing a helmet reduces that risk by almost one third.
2. Pillion riders need helmets too! What is true of the drivers of motorcyclists is
also true of their passengers. So do remember to have an extra helmet for pillion
riders.
3. Reduce your speed. The likelihood of death occurring in the event of a crash
doubles for every 5km over a 50km speed limit. So, driving within posted speed
limit will not only help you to avoid a speeding ticket and having points docked
from your licence, it may save your life.
