Municipal Corporations get funding for drain cleaning ahead of Isaac

Councillors islandwide are to share of $115 m to clean drains, as the country braces for heavy rains and possible flooding associated with Tropical Storm Isaac.

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie says the country is in the height of the hurricane season and everyone should be on their guard and continue to monitor the weather situation associated with Tropical Storm Isaac.

He says although the country is not inline for any direct impact from these systems there will heavy rainfalls over the next couple of days and flooding must be anticipated.

The Local Government Minister says all major players to include search and rescue and disaster coordinators will be placed on alert for any eventualities of natural disaster for the hurricane season.

And, local government authorities are being urged to pay special attention to homeless persons as the country braces for heavy rains and possible flooding associated with tropical storm Isaac.

That charge was made by Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie while addressing councillors and officers at the Trelawny Municipal Corporation yesterday (Sep 13).

The country is on high alert as it braces for heavy rains which weather forecasters have predicted will be pelting the island over the weekend.
