by May 11th, 2022

National Water Commission, N-W-C workers will end their 2 day strike tonight (May 11).

This as a back to work agreement has been reached between the commission and the 5 unions representing over 2,000 N-W-C workers, following 16 hours of meetings.

Yesterday (May 10), the workers took industrial action to register their anger, about an outstanding reclassification exercise, among other issues.

Over half a million customers were affected.

In a statement this afternoon, the Labour Ministry said the workers are to return to work starting with the 11 pm shift.

Speaking with Irie Fm News earlier this afternoon, General Secretary of the National Workers Union, Granville Valentine said it is in everyone’s interest that there is a return to normalcy.

And while a back to work agreement has been reached with National Water Commission workers, it will likely take some time for water supply to be returned to customers.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness earlier indicated that the Jamaica Defence Force was instructed to mobilize its team of engineers to restore water supply to the country.

However he indicates that its not a simple task.

Mr. Holness says he has been getting calls from several groups about how the lack of water has been impacting their operations.

Among the groups are hoteliers who have had to relocate guests as their water in storage runs low.
