Negligent public servants costing Govt billions

by May 22nd, 2018

An act of negligence committed by a police officer, in relation to the seizure of a plane 22 years ago, cost the government US $2 m in judgement debt.

The matter is among several cases that prompted the Justice Minister to call on all public servants to exercise greater care in the exercise of their duties.

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck says the funds were paid out last year.

While making his contribution to the Sectoral Debate today (May 22) Mr. Chuck revealed that the government has cleared off all its judgement debts.

Over one billion dollars was used to pay for 303 matters.

Mr. Chuck says over $190 m was paid out in compensation, to the victims of the West Kingston operation.

He adds that all lawyers who provided legal aid, and submitted bills last year, have been paid.

In lamenting that the billions spent on judgement debts could have served better to build schools or fix roads, Mr. Chuck urged public servants to be more careful.
