The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) says its technical team has completed the clearing up of a crude oil spill, at the Mammee Bay exit of the North-South Highway, in St. Ann.

The oil spill resulted from a fatal motor vehicle accident, this morning (July 14).

Manager of Public Education and Corporate Communication at Nepa, Rosemarie Lee, says a vacuum truck and several other equipment were used in the process.

She says marl was placed on the area to absorb the oil.

Additionally, Nepa had instructed the company involved, to clean all drains and hard surfaces in the immediate area.

A containment boom was put in place at the mouth of the drain to prevent any residual oil entering the marine environment.

Meantime, Superintendent Courtney Coubrie of the Traffic Police says the driver of the truck which crashed at the Mammee Bay exit, has died.

Dead is 20 year-old Jubelanie Dennis of Poincianna Drive, Cedar Grove Estate in St. Catherine.

Reports are that about 4:45 a.m. Dennis was driving a Volvo truck along the highway, when on reaching the exit, the vehicle allegedly developed mechanical difficulties, hit an embankment, and overturned.

The truck was reportedly laden with crude oil.

The police and the fire department responded, and removed Mr. Dennis from the truck.
