New road safety regulations reviewed by Cabinet yesterday

by February 1st, 2022

The new road safety regulations were reviewed by the Cabinet yesterday (January 31).

That’s according to Vice Chairman of the Road Safety Council Dr. Lucien Jones.

Speaking in an interview with IRIE F-M news, Dr. Jones expressed hope that the long-awaited regulations will be passed in a matter of days.

The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica and other stakeholders have repeatedly called for the completion and approval of the regulations as a priority.

The new Road Traffic Act was approved by the Lower and Upper House in August 2018, however, it has not been enabled because of Government’s failure to approve the regulations, which contain new fines.

Dr. Jones noted that the new regulations will help to discourage bad driving practices and lead to fewer road fatalities.
