Norwood community still tense following quadruple shooting

by September 28th, 2017

Councillor for the Montego Bay Central Division in St. James, Joshua Cummings says the Norwood community remains tense but calm, following today’s (Sep 28) fatal shooting incident. Four persons were shot, 2 fatally.

Residents have identified those killed as 36 year old Sanjay Beckford of Providence Heights in Flanker, and 32 year old Sheldon Bailey of Paradise in Norwood.

Councillor Cummings says police are monitoring the community.

It’s believed that today’s shooting incident is a reprisal for an earlier incident.

Police theorise that this latest shooting stemmed from an ongoing gang warfare between men from Huga Lane and Church Lane.

Reports are that about 7:30 a.m. Beckford was walking his daughter to school when he took a short cut through a section of the community known as Huga Lane.

The child, who is in grade three at the Albion Primary and Junior High school, is believed to be about 8 years old.

On reaching a section of the roadway, a motor vehicle drove up and four men armed with high powered weapons alighted and opened fire randomly at several people along the roadway.

Beckford and his daughter were shot several times. The father also had an infant in his arms, who received bruises from a fall.

Two other men, including an elderly farmer who was tending to his animals nearby, also received gunshot wounds.

The gunmen then escaped in the motor vehicle.

The police were summoned and all 4 wounded persons were taken to hospital, where Beckford and Bailey were pronounced dead.

Beckford’s daughter and the elderly man were admitted. Their condition is not known.
