NS highway toll rates to be rolled back

by July 20th, 2017

Transport Minister, Mike Henry has decided to roll back the toll rates on the North-South Highway, following public outcry.

The rates were adjusted on April 28, in response to a shortage of coins.

Earlier, Permanent Secretary in the Transport Ministry, Dr. Alwin Hales, had indicated that there will be no immediate roll back of toll rates, as the ministry is now in the period of the rate review, and varying of the toll rates is expected in September.

However, in a release this afternoon the transport minister says the roll back should be effective this weekend.

Mr. Henry says he is honouring his commitment that there will be a roll back, as soon as the coin shortage eased.

He adds that the largest impact of the adjusted rates, have been felt by motorists traversing the Caymanas to angels leg of the highway.

He adds that these motorists must now enjoy a reduction in the rate.

Meanwhile, Mr. Henry says he is awaiting the formal receipt of the final application from the toll road operators for a rate review, which must be received 60 days in advance of the effective date of the variation of the rates.

He adds that this is in keeping with the concession agreement between the government and the toll road operators and should come into effect in September this year.
