NWA clears some roadways affected by heavy rains

by May 8th, 2018

Several road sections that were flooded in four southern parishes due to persistent rains have been open to vehicular access.

The National Works Agency says it was able to carry-out works in Clarendon, Manchester, St. Elizabeth and Westmoreland, as flood waters have receded.

Senior Communications Officer at the NWA Ramona Lawson says several roadways in rural St. Andrew have also been opened to at least single lane vehicular access.

She says efforts are underway to regain access to the rock hall to parks road corridor by the end today (May 8).

Ms. Lawson adds that the section of Half Way Tree Road, in the vicinity of Retirement Road, that caused delays this morning, has been reinstated.

Meantime, a section of the John Golding Road in St. Andrew has been closed to vehicular traffic, following the collapse of a pipe culvert in the vicinity of the hope valley experimental primary and infant school.

The National Works Agency says it is moving to secure the affected section of the roadway, and erect the necessary signs to alert motorists of the road closure.

According to Communication Manager at the NWA Stephen Shaw, the plastic pipe culvert appears to have been previously burnt out from beneath the roadway, causing the road to be severely undermined during the recent flood rains.

He says the replacement of the culvert and the reinstatement of the road are being treated with the utmost urgency as a number of critical facilities and institutions are located along the roadway.

Mr. Shaw adds that the plan is to install a concrete, fire-resistant culvert.

The John Golding road is a critical roadway in the Mona community connecting Old Hope Road to Mona Road.

During the period of closure, motorists will only be able to access the Hope Valley Primary School from the direction of Papine.

There is no access from the direction of August Town or Mona road.

Meantime, the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) says access to August Town via Papine is being affected by a break-away in the vicinity of the School of Hope.

The state run bus company says, the alternative route for the affected routes 77 and 78 is into Papine turn around down Hope Road onto Garden Boulevard, Mona Road and onto August Town.
